28.6months: the average prison sentence for domestic burglarySentencing Council, 2019

The rest received a suspended sentence (12%) or a community sentence (9%). These are the most recent burglary-only figures the Sentencing Council has published.

When prisoners are released

Since 1 October 2026, under the Sentencing Act 2026, most adults serving a standard fixed-term prison sentence become eligible for release after one-third of it. Before, it was 40% or 50%. The middle third is spent under supervision in the community. Offences such as rape, serious child sexual offences, grooming and unlawful killing are excluded from the change; burglary is not.

What that means in practice (our arithmetic): on the average sentence of 28.6 months, one-third is about 9½ months in prison.
